The course contains specialised studies within the field of form theory, sound and product interaction.
Experiment with sound, imagery and interaction, 3 credits. The section contains several short practical design projects where students in teams explore the connections between sound, imagery and interaction, and their relation to chosen products identities and brands. The students are introduced to relevant software for sound processing during this section.
Product analysis and project work, 4.5 credits. This section contains design and form theory where students in teams analyse and design a product with form and sound qualities. The students are introduced to sound design theory and relevant software for sound processing during this section. The result is presented with physical models and adherent sound demonstrations.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
account for expressive qualities in interaction with products or systems.
Competence and Skills
use interactive prototypes to explore and express the knowledge of the theory of different interaction modalities.
show and comprehend how the combination of expressive modalities can bring out the identity and brand of a product.
Judgment and Approach
Make assessment in design based on relevant artistic grounds.
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognized university. Specific entry requirements are: 60 ECTS credits in the field of Design. Student must have passed all previous master courses at the first year of the Interaction Design programme at Umeå Institute of Design or the equivalent. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.
Form of instruction
The course consists of lectures and exercise as well as individual studies. All sections in the course are obligatory.
Examination in this case refers to the list of deliverables as stated in the project brief presented at the beginning of the course. This usually includes digital and 3D presentations of the project solution as well as an oral presentation and a written report based on the student's design brief and including relevant research results, the used work method, sketching and the final results as well as a conclusion. In order to pass the entire course, the student must complete all of the various exercises and obligatory assignments and these must be approved. The grade Fail (U) or Pass (G) is a summary of the results of the various course elements and is given only when the final presentation is approved.
For students in need of special pedagogical support due to disabilities, individual adaptation of examination forms should always be considered based on the student's needs. The examination form is adjusted within the framework of the course syllabus' intended learning outcomes. The course coordinating teacher shall, upon request from the student, consult with the examiner to quickly decide on an adjusted form of examination. The decision shall then be conveyed to the student.
For students who have not obtained the grade Pass, other examination sessions will be arranged. A student who for two consecutive examinations for the same course or sub-course has not been passed, has the right to have another examiner appointed, if there are no special reasons against this (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 6, 22 §). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.
ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University. Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
