Contents

The course introduce stoichiometry, the electron structure of the atom, the periodic table, chemical bonds in molecules and intermolecular forces is solid, liquids and in gas phase. Chemical equilibrium, in liquids, solutions and acid-base equilibrium, solubility and complex ion equilibrium are discussed. The relation between all equilibrium constants and thermodynamics Gibbs free energies is introduced in an general introduction of thermodynamics. The radioactivity is discussed with respect to its danger for living organism. Chemical kinetics of chemical reactions are analyzed as well as general electro chemistry. The chemical mechanism of the green house effect is presented as well as the environmental chemistry relevant for a sustainable development of the society. Different aspects of this complex problem is discussed in a couple of lectures and in individual student projects where a chemical is followed from production, its use, diffusion and effects in the environment.

Required Knowledge

English proficiency equivalent to IELTS Academic Training –minimum score 5.0 with no individual score below 4.5 (Tests taken before January 2005 not admissible or TOEFL – minimum score 500 on paper based test and not below 4.0 on the TWE, Alternatively 173 on computer based test with iBT61 is also required as well as basic entrance requirements for higher studies in Swedish language proficiency if the course in taught in Swedish.
