Master's Programme in Crisis Management and Peacebuilding, 120 credits
Entry Requirements
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognized university. Specific entry requirements: At least 30 ECTS in peace and conflict studies, international relations, human rights, global studies, crisis management or development studies. An independently written thesis equivalent to at least 15 ECTS. Documented proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English 6/level 2.
Degree
Upon the completion of the study programme (120 credits), a student who has applied for a degree certificate can obtain a Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) according to the local qualification descriptor established by the Vice-Chancellor (see Umeå University's website). The Swedish translation of Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) is Filosofie masterexamen. The degree is awarded in the main field of Peace and Conflict Studies (freds- och konfliktstudier) with the specialization Crisis Management and Peacebuilding (krishantering och fredsbyggande).

Master of Science, 120 credits
For Master of Science 120 credits, the student should be able to:
- demonstrate ability to understand and analyze different national crisis management systems.
- demonstrate deepened ability to utilize different methodological tools for analysis of different aspects of complex crisis management and peacebuilding.
- demonstrate deepened ability to independently identify, structure, and analyze scientific problems within the scientific disciplines of crisis management and peacebuilding.
- demonstrate specialist knowledge and understanding of global and regional governance in the international system.
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of principles of and organizational forms in reconstruction following crisis, disasters and conflicts.

Transfer of Credits
Students who consider themselves in possession of knowledge from previous relevant studies or professional or vocational experience that can be comparable to a course or part of a course in the study programme, can apply for transfer of credits. Approved transfer of credits means that the student does not need to take the part or parts of the education that the decision covers. General
The programme overview under the heading "Programme Structure" indicates which courses are compulsory and which are elective.
Compulsory courses are the courses that all students within the programme normally study. A student who follows the programme is guaranteed a seat on all compulsory courses, provided that the eligibility requirements for the current course are met. Eligibility requirements are stated in the respective course syllabus.
Elective courses are a selection of courses that Umeå university offers within the framework of the programme and where the students choose which of these courses they should register for. The student is guaranteed a place on elective courses, provided that the eligibility requirements for the courses are met. However, the student is not guaranteed a place on their first-hand choice of course. Eligibility requirements are stated in the respective course syllabus. The choice of elective courses is made in consultation with the programme director.

The thesis and some written exams can also be submitted in Swedish.
Thesis
For a Degree of Master of Science (60 credits) the student must have completed a second-cycle degree thesis of at least 15 credits in Peace and Conflict Studies.
For a two-year Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) the student must have completed a second-cycle degree thesis of at least 30 credits in Peace and Conflict Studies. The degree thesis may comprise fewer than 30 credits, but at least 15 credits, provided that the student has already completed a degree thesis at the second-cycle level comprising at least 15 credits in Peace and Conflict Studies, or equivalent.
