At a time when Sweden is experiencing an increase in mining across Sapmi, including new proposals for mining Uranium, this seminar invites five artists to share their research on mining rare earth minerals, iron ore and uranium. Chaired by Ele Carpenter and Agnes Villette. The seminar will be take place in the UmArts research studio and online.
Lena Stenberg will present her film Girunvarri about the impact of the LKB mine on reindeer herding in Sapmi. Elena Mazzi will report back from her artists residency at the Narsaq International Research Station near the Kuannersuit uranium mine in Greenland. Christian Danielewitz will tell us about his work with extractive economies in Africa, South America and China, particularly rare earths, copper, and phosphate mining. Grit Ruhland will tell us about storytelling and Uranium Mining in former East Germany. Stefan Jensen will unpack the history of Uranium mining at Ranstadverket, and its role in the concept of the ‘Swedish Line’.
