Welcome to an open seminar that you can attend either in person or online, featuring researchers from Várdduo – Centre for Sámi Research.
The seminar explores Sámi conditions and experiences from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Attention is given to how historical processes have shaped present-day understandings of traditional lands, culture, and rights, as well as how these dimensions are influenced by the social, political, and economic changes affecting Sápmi today.
Gudrun Norstedt will speak on A borderline case. Citizenship and rights to pasture lands in northernmost Fennoscandia 1850-1950.
Åsa Össbo presents Protecting the land of reindeer herders? The conflicting outcomes in the demarcation of the Cultivation Border through Norrbotten county 1867-1890.
Kristina Sehlin MacNeil highlights Contested lands, changing worlds: Sámi and Indigenous relations to land in a shifting geopolitical era.
The seminar is part of the seminar series Sápmi and Its Cultural History. The series explores topics related to Sami history, culture, and contemporary society through presentations by researchers and cultural practitioners who share their knowledge, perspectives, and experiences.
The seminar series is a collaborative initiative of Várdduo – Centre for Sami Research, Kin Museum of Contemporary Art, Tjállegoáhte – Sápmi Writers’ Centre, Stockholm University of the Arts, and HDK-Valand.
The seminar is offered in a hybrid format, with participation possible both on-site and via Zoom.
