When strong emotions take over: empirical ways to practice emotional regulation in everyday life
We often know what we "should" do when anxiety, perfectionism or stress take over, and yet, in the moment, it rarely feels that simple.
The workshop "When strong emotions take over: Empirical ways to practice emotional regulation" will bring together three experts who work with emotional regulation from complementary angles, offering both the science behind strong emotions and concrete, evidence-based tools to navigate them.
Malin Jonsson (Umeå University) is a psychologist working with the Student Health service. Her session looks at what causes anxiety connected to performing well academically, high standards and self-criticism, and, just as importantly, what can be done to ease that anxiety and rediscover safe spaces for creativity and curiosity in the midst of stress.
Dr. Michael Barth (Johannes Kepler University Linz) is a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapeutic medicine. He is senior physician on a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) ward focused on the treatment of borderline personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, and interim head of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine at the Kepler Klinikum Linz, where he also teaches at the Faculty of Medicine.
Lena Schmitz (Friedrich Schiller University Jena) is a PhD candidate in Work, Industrial and Organizational Psychology at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Her research explores how cultural, individual and structural factors intersect in organizational contexts, with the aim of translating findings into practical, context-sensitive interventions that strengthen wellbeing and inclusive health promotion.
Together, the three sessions move from understanding anxiety and perfectionism, to learning actionable regulation strategies, to embedding self-compassion practices, equipping participants with insight and concrete techniques to navigate stress more sustainably.
How to register
The workshop will take place on 21 October 2026, from 11:30 to 13:30 CET, in a hybrid format, allowing participants to join either online or in person.
