Deacons and Digitalization
The Church of Sweden’s social work in a digital age.

The material that will be presented relates to an ongoing IDS-project in religious studies that explores the Church of Sweden’s social work in a digital age. How do deacons in the Church of Sweden perceive that digitalization of society affect the parishes social work? To answer that question interviews have been conducted with parish deacons. The data illustrates how the deacons address social exclusion by using different strategies to bridge the digital divide (van Dijk 2020) and to offer spaces for respectful encounters online, offline and in hybrid settings. It also highlights ethical dilemmas and strategies used by the deacons in relation to their personal social media accounts (always ordained but not always on duty).
