Literature Seminar: Thinking – Fast, Slow and Artificial

There is a growing body of literature exploring the impact of AI on higher education. In this seminar, we will discuss how AI may influence human reasoning and thinking. Our discussions will be based on the preprint by Shaw and Nate (2026), Thinking – Fast, Slow and Artificial: How AI is Reshaping Human Reasoning and the Rise of Cognitive Surrender.

The seminar is intended as an opportunity to critically examine the opportunities and challenges AI presents for teaching, learning, and academic thinking. Please read the full text, or selected sections that are of particular interest to you. As you read, identify one or two questions that you would like to discuss with colleagues during the seminar.

To guide your reflections, you might consider the following questions:

• What implications does this have for your role as a teacher?
• How might AI influence student learning and development?
