In recent decades, Baltic Sea has experienced more frequent and intense marine heatwaves — periods of extreme warming with major impacts on marine ecosystems, particularly plankton communities and their role in biogeochemical cycles. While effects on plankton food webs have been studied, little is known about the interplay between benthic macrophytes and plankton in shaping coastal responses to such events.
In this seminar, Tanguy Soulié showcases the mesocosm experiment at the Umeå Marine Sciences Centre that simulates the effect of a heatwave on natural plankton and macrophyte communities.
