Theories and methods in research on emotions in engineering education

Time Wednesday 12 October, 2022 at 13:00 - 14:30
Place Lindellhallen 3, Social Science Building (hybrid)

This talk consists of three related parts. First, in a pre-recorded lecture, Professor Quinlan provides an overview of four theoretical stances that have been taken in research on emotions in education, each offering different assumptions and educational implications. She also introduces a model describing five types of emotional relationships that matter in higher education. Drawing from a wide-ranging review of the literature, this talk thus offers a broad range of possible theoretical grounding for research and scholarly discussions about emotions in higher education.

Second, Dr. Idalis Villanueva Alarcón provides an overview of traditional and contemporary methods used to measure emotions in engineering education research, also discussing advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Dr. Villanueva Alarcón concludes with reflecting on fruitful avenues for future research on emotions in engineering education.”

Finally, Dr. Johanna Lönngren briefly relates the above presentations to the current state of research on emotions in engineering education, based on the findings from a recent systematic review of the research literature on emotions in engineering education.

After the lecture, we invite participants to engage in further discussions and informal exchange. We will provide fika (coffee, tea, and snacks) between 14:30–15:00. The lecture and fika are part of the international Emotions in Engineering Education Symposium (https://www.umu.se/institutionen-for-naturvetenskapernas-och-matematikens-didaktik/forskning/eeen/eees2022/), which is held at Umeå University, 12–14 October 2022.

Sign up by 9 October at the latest. In-person attendance and fika are offered on a first come, first serve basis.

Event type: Lecture

Kathleen M. Quinlan is currently Professor of Higher Education and Director of the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Kent, UK. Her research focuses on higher education students’ holistic development, including emotion, motivation, and interest. She has also researched discipline-specificity in learning and teaching, with studies on engineering education, veterinary education, and humanities education. Through her research and academic leadership positions in the US, Australia, and England, she has inspired educational researchers and educators alike, for example through her innovative book How Higher Education Feels: Commentaries on Poems that Illuminate Emotion in Learning and Teaching

Dr. Villanueva Alarcón is an Associate Professor of Engineering Education in the University of Florida. Her research interests focus on using mixed- and multi-modal methods to explore complex, social and personal components of learning and experience in engineering. Some examples of her research are to explore hidden curriculum pathways in engineering and how these connect to motivation, emotion, and advocacy. Furthermore, she uses physiological sensor technologies to explore emotional arousals due to authentic classroom and research events in engineering and science education. She hopes that expanding the methods and approaches to intersectional phenomena may help shed new light into the individual, social, structural, and systemic factors that influence human performance and behavior.

Dr. Johanna Lönngren is
an Associate Professor at the Department of Science and Mathematics Education (NMD) at Umeå University. Her research focuses on the role of emotions in engineering education for sustainable development. She also leads the international Emotions in Engineering Education Network (EEEN).
