Juan Carlos Nieves is an associate professor at Umeå University (UMU), where he teaches and directs the Master’s Programme in Artificial Intelligence, contributing significantly to graduate-level AI education. He is one of the research leaders in the Responsible AI group, which successfully investigates the ethical and societal implications of AI to support decision-makers. Prof. Nieves has substantial experience bridging theoretical perspectives on Trustworthy AI with real-world industrial practices, reflecting his focus on socially aware and ethically grounded intelligent systems. AI tools are more embedded in research practices. An AI tool can be used for simple tasks such as revising typos and grammatical errors in a scientific paper or to run a full analysis of scientific datasets. Nevertheless, the use of these tools raises questions about the impact of these AI tools in research practices, e.g., the transparency of research outcomes, the management of scientific datasets in combinations of Agentic AI tools. In this talk, we revise the vision of Trustworthy AI and its principles, as well as highlight the relevance of having clear rules regarding the use of AI tools in research practices.
