Search consultation

If you are an employee at Umeå University or Region Västerbotten, you can get help with systematic searches, literature reviews and mapping of research fields.

We can help you with advanced searches

Employees at Umeå University and Region Västerbotten can order a search consultation from the library free of charge. You can get help with:

  • strategic searches, for example systematic reviews
  • literature reviews
  • mapping a research area in preparation for a future application.

We have expert knowledge in the following areas

  • content in various databases
  • how different types of databases are structured
  • how you can use keywords as well as subject terms from a database thesaurus
  • how you can present a search so that it can be repeated (by others).

Our expert group can help you make high quality systematic reviews. We can also examine your search strategies and add our experiences from other searches.

Doctoral students can schedule a tutoring appointment instead

The search consultation service is not available to you if you are a doctoral student. If you need help with information seeking you can schedule a tutoring appointment with a librarian.

Your search consultation - some questions for you

In order to help you in the best possible way, we need specific information about your request. When you order a search consultation from us, we will need to know:

  • Which department or clinic are you working in?
  • What is the purpose of your search?
  • What is your research question?
  • Are there any exclusion criteria (for example language or publication date)?
  • Is there a time line for the search consultation?
  • Do you have references to key articles (that also correspond to your inclusion criteria)?
  • Are there any specific databases that need to be included?
  • In what format should we deliver the search results (Endnote, for example)?
