Acclaimed chef Marcus Samuelsson invites Umeå residents on a culinary journey

NEWS Marcus Samuelsson is Sweden's most internationally famous chef. On Tuesday May 27 at 6:00 pm, he will give a special lecture in the Teacher Education Building atrium. The lecture is free and all are welcome to attend!

An adjunct professor in meal sciences at Umeå University's School of Restaurant and Culinary Arts, Marcus Samuelsson will talk about how his travel around the world left their mark on his taste buds and style of cooking. He will also discuss how other influences such as design, methods of serving and interior design have influenced him.

Marcus Samuelsson’s restaurants in New York City are distinctly Scandinavian, but now he has chosen to explore the traditional cuisine of Africa. Recently, he opened a new restaurant in New York City called Merkato, a name inspriedfrom the market in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The lecture, which is estimated to last for one and a half hours, culminates in a special way.

Marcus will put the finishing touches on three small African dishes prepared by gastronomy students at the School of Restaurant and Culinary Arts under his supervision during the day The first 35 people that attend will receive a ticket that gives them an opportunity to taste the dishes. African cooking is also on the agenda as Marcus will instruct gastronomy students at Umea University’s School of Restaurant and Culinary Arts.

Members of the media are welcome to attend the kitchen at the School of Restaurant and Culinary Arts at 2:30 pm.

Marcus Samuelsson was born in 1970 in Ethiopia and grew up in Gothenburg, where he began his career as a chef on Park Avenue. He has been apprenticed in reputable restaurants in Switzerland, France and Austria, including the five-star restaurant Victoria Jungfrau in Switzerland. His latest cookbook is titled “Discovery of a Continent Foods, Flavors, and Inspirations from Africa”. He has achieved tremendous success at Aquavit restaurant in New York City. In February 2008 he opened an Aquavit restaurant in the Clarion Hotel in Stockholm. In addition to Aquavit, he runs Riingo, AQ Cafe at the Scandinavian House and the newly opened African restaurant Merkato in New York.
