Anders Fällström appointed new Pro-Vice-Chancellor

Anders Fällström will be the new Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Umeå University. He will assume the post on 1 July 2013 and will also act as the surrogate for Vice-Chancellor Lena Gustafsson.
Kjell Jonsson, the current Pro-Vice-Chancellor, has a mandate that extends to the 30th of June this year. The Board of Directors at Umeå University has appointed a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the next three years. It will be Anders Fällström, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Education at Umeå University.
“I am very happy that Anders will be taking on the role as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the next three years,” says Lena Gustafsson. “Anders has the qualifications to be excellent and he will continue to be responsible for educational issues, which was a prerequisite for his changed mandate.”
Vice-Chancellor Lena Gustafsson also took the opportunity to express gratitude to Kjell Jonsson, the departing Pro-Vice-Chacncellor.
“At the same time I would like to thank and emphasise that we will miss Kjell as Pro-Vice-Chancellor, a position he has fulfilled extremely well to the satisfaction of Umeå University, continues Lena Gustafsson. “Furthermore, the university management and Umeå University as a whole will call upon Kjell's strong expertise as an adviser to the Vice-Chancellor.”
Anders Fällström was born in 1967 in Sollefteå. While still in the final year of upper secondary school, he began his university studies in mathematics at Umeå University. Upon completion of upper secondary school he did military service in the language school of the Swedish Armed Forces where he earned bachelor's degree in mathematics and Russian. He received his Ph.D. in 1994 and then continued with postdoctoral studies in Russia and the United States.
In 2000 Anders Fällström was named Associate Professor in the complex analysis field of research. He has been involved as director of graduate studies and head of the department of mathematics. In autumn 2008, he was appointed Pro-Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology with special responsibility for education. Since 1 July 2010, he has been the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Education at Umeå University.
