Anna Johansson awarded by Kungliga Skytteanska samfundet

NEWS The royal scientific academy “Kungliga Skytteanska samfundet” has awarded Anna Johansson, associate senior lecturer at HUMlab, their 2013 “Prize for younger and well-earned researcher”

The choice of this year’s laureate was justified as follows:
“Anna Johansson, born 1980, defended her thesis Self-harm: An ethnological study of meaning and Identity in accounts of cutting in 2010. The thesis, and her exceptionally urgent research theme, adds to new knowledge about the cultural relationships between young people and the psychiatric care system. The thesis has been given much public attention, both because of Anna Johansson’s ability to transfer difficult questions into accessible text, and her good ability to verbally communicate with the public, with representatives from care giving institutions and with the media. In addition to her contribution to the growing field of digital humanities, she has shown great skill in developing new theoretical models. In her current work within the Media Places project, financed for five years by the Wallenberg foundation, Anna Johansson has a significant role in creating collaborations between HUMlab and the universities of Stanford and Wollongong. After defending her thesis, she has produced 4 book chapters and 8 peer reviewed articles. The nomination of Anna Johansson was supported by several professors at the Department of Culture- and Media Studies and senior researchers at HUMlab and at the Department of Social Work, all at Umeå University. Anna Johansson has shown herself to be a very promising young researcher, both through her work at Umeå University and through her growing international network.”
The prize ceremony will take place at university’s annual celebration ceremony on October 19.
