Autumn 2007 ceremony for honorary doctors and newly appointed professors

NEWS The annual autumn ceremony marking the installation of new professors and appointment of honorary doctors will be held on 20 October 2007. The ceremony will feature 8 honorary doctors, 25 newly installed professors, and 17 prize recipients. Among this year’s honorary doctors are gallerist Stefan Andersson, former dental technician and jazz musician Rudolf Lindberg, and Sune Rosell, CEO of the biotechnology company Innate Pharmaceuticals AB.

The installation of new professors and appointment of honorary doctors is not only a ceremony for attendees but also a festival of knowledge for all who are eager to learn. Prior the ceremony the honorary doctors, new professors, and prize recipients will collectively present popular science based lectures which are open to the general public and entirely free. The honorary doctors and prize recipients will hold lectures beginning on Thursday 18 October at 6:30 pm and continue on Friday the 19th at 1:00 pm.

The lectures to be given in English are:

Exploring Inner Space: “The World's Smallest Word Processor", Thomas A. Kunkel, Honorary Doctor at the Faculty of Medicine.

Internationalisation of Teacher Education in Light of the Bologna Process, Pavel Zgaga, Honorary Doctor at the Faculty of Teacher Education.

A rendezvous with social-science measurement, Wim J. van der Linden, Honorary Doctor at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Electronic Literature: New Horizons for the Literature, Katherine Hayles, Honorary Doctor a the Faculty of Arts.

Why Do We Procrastinate? Eric Maskin, Erik Kempe Award recipient and 2007 Nobel Laureate in Economics.

On Saturday 20 October at noon, a lecture will be given in English by newly installed Professor of Plant Physiology Vaughan Hurry titled "How do plants know it is cold our there?"

The ceremony in the Aula Nordica auditorium begins at 5:00 pm and concludes at approximately 7:00 pm. A banquet dinner for invited guests will be held directly thereafter at Universum Restaurant.

On Friday 19 October a pre-ceremony rehearsal will be held in Aula Nordica from 9:30 – 11:30 am. The ceremony participants will take part with doctoral hats and wreaths. The media is welcome to attend the rehearsal.

A new feature this year is that the ceremony participants are invited to join and contribute in a virtual meeting place on Facebook, where they will have the chance to meet before the ceremonial weekend.
