Design student scores double awards at the Paris Motor Show

NEWS Kosin Voravattayagon, student at the Institute of Design at Umeå University, has been named 2010 Student Designer of the Year in the competition Interior Motives Design Awards. His car 'Crossover X' also won the best interior production category. He received the prizes and $5,000 at the Paris Motor Show.

The 'Crossover X' is a "beautiful, believable and functional" design, according to one design director on the judging panel. It is designed using the Scandinavian design philosophy, emphasizing simplicity and purity. The Crossover X uses this philosophy to provide an appropriate vehicle for the young people lifestyle. The overall form has been inspired by glass works, which also reflects the Scandinavian design language.

The safest seating position is at the centre of a car. Thus, the seats are moved towards the middle to maximize passenger safety. The car allows a large degree of interior flexibility. For example, the front passenger seat folds and slides forward to provide an Ottoman-style rear chair for long journey driving. The project is a collaboration with Saab.

The awards are organized by Interior Motives magazine, this year with the theme "Driving the Interior Revolution". Kosin Voravattayagon received the overall design award "Student Designer of the Year". In addition, he was awarded in the category "Best production interior". There were hundreds of entries from around the globe. The finalists and winners of this year's competition were revealed at a glitzy ceremony in Paris on the evening of 1 October, after the preview days of the Auto Show.
