Dieter Müller, Professor at the Department of Geography and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, 20 November.

Dieter Müller served as Professor of Human Geography at the Department of Geography and his research focus was on tourism and regional development.
He was Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences from 2011–2016 and thereafter took the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor in the University Management with responsibility for research and doctoral education in the social sciences and humanities from 2016–2025. Beside those roles, he was also member of several boards, networks and committees both within and beyond Umeå University.
“It is with great sadness that we have received the news that Dieter is no longer with us. I know that Dieter was a highly committed and well-regarded colleague who made a lasting impact both at the University and in society. My thoughts are especially with Dieter’s immediate family and with everyone who have worked with him in any of his roles here at the University,” says Tora Holmberg, Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University.
On Monday, 24 November, the flag will be flown at half-mast on Campus Umeå in his memory.
