Dramatic rise in admitted students at Umeå University
NEWS
Nearly 3000 more students have been admitted to studies at Umeå University for the upcoming autumn term, in comparison with last year. A record is expected to be set for new enrolled students.
According to the National Agency for Service to Universities and University Colleges, VHS, a total of 24,682 individuals have been admitted to programmes and courses at Umeå University for the autumn 2009 academic term. The figures include domestic and international applicants. There are 2,787 more students in comparison with the same application period in 2008. The increase is a rise of 12.7 per cent.
The largest increase is in individual courses, where 19,266 individuals have been admitted, compared to 16,948 for the autumn 2008 academic term.
It now remains to be seen how many of the admitted students will actually enrol and arrive at the university when the autumn term begins in early September. In the case of Sweden as a whole, there is also a growing interest in higher education. The recent economic downturn and large number of prospective students in the age demographic are often cited as reasons.
According to VHS, 285,968 applications have been admitted to programmes and courses at higher education institutions throughout the country for the upcoming term. This represents a national increase of 13 per cent from the autumn 2008 term
