A unanimous University Board reached a decision on 6 October 2021 to make a proposal to the Government to renew the appointment of the current Vice-Chancellor Hans Adolfsson for a further period. The proposal was also supported by the University’s Consultative Assembly. The Government has now decided with full confidence to renew Hans Adolfsson as Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University for another three years.

In February, the University Board also decided that Pro-Vice-Chancellor Katrine Riklund will continue for an additional three year period.

“I am pleased and proud to have the continued confidence and look forward to pursuing to develop and strengthen Umeå University's education and research together with students and staff,” says Hans Adolfsson.  “For instance, Umeå University has a very important role to play in meeting the rapidly increasing demand for research, education and collaboration relevant to the green transformation of society in northern Sweden.”

The Government is in charge of making the formal decisions on the appointment of vice-chancellors at the country’s higher education institutions. Normally, vice-chancellors are appointed for a six-year period, with the possibility for reappointment for two three-year periods.
