Five top candidates for Vice-Chancellor post at Umeå University

Umeå University’s recruiting group has been working intensively during the autumn term to compile a list of leading candidates for the position of Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University. Over twenty highly qualified candidates have come forth in the discussions. The recruiting group has now determined that there are five main candidates.
These five persons - two currently employed at Umeå University and three external – will be called for interviews by the recruiting group during the month of January. Following the interviews, and regular reference checks, the recruiting group will decide which candidates will be chosen for interviews by the hearing panel.
The five main candidates are (in alphabetical order): Håkan Billig: Professor of Physiology at the University of Gothenburg and Secretary General at the Scientific Council for Medicine, Swedish Research Council. Lena Gustafsson: Professor of Biotechnology at Chalmers Institute of Technology and Deputy Director General of Vinnova. Erik Höglund: Professor of Machine Elements and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology. Britta Lundgren: Professor of Ethnology and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Umeå University. Marianne Sommarin: Professor of Plant Biochemistry at Umeå University and Vice Rector with responsibility for research development and research evaluation at Umeå University.
Facts: The recruiting group is composed of members of the University Board and includes: Birgitta Johansson-Hedberg (Chairperson, and also Chair of the University Board), Peter Kopelman, Åsa Gunnarsson, Hans Wolf-Watz, Amanda Irgum, Erik Wallin and Barbro Biström. University Director Lars Lustig acts as the group’s secretary and administrative coordinator. The hearing panel consists of 64 persons (32 faculty/researchers, 16 other employees and 16 students). The hearing panel is the group to which consultation takes place before the appearance of the Vice-Chancellor. The University Board decides on who will be recommended to be the new Vice-Chancellor. The government makes the formal decision based on the Board's proposal. A university vice-chancellor is normally appointed for a period of six years with the possibility of a three-year extension.
