Umeå University is undertaking an investment in mobile phone services. The first service, released in July 2010, was iPhone app with access to social media. The next step is maps that will help students find the educational facilities on campus by using their mobile phones. Google is a key partner in this effort.
In connection with Jerkland’s visit, other features will be available for students such as the ability to ”check in” to locations all over Campus Umeå and wins prizes with the use of the location-based mobile networking service Gowalla.
“The visit from Google is part of our strategic investment in mobile phone services and our collaboration with external partners. We are in an active development phase of operation-related functions for students and staff," says Soren Berglund, head of IT at Umeå University.

The recent explosion of efficient and often free web services, smart mobile solutions such as GPS functions based on open interfaces, new web services, e-services, mobile "apps", etc., have further heightened the competition for customers.
“The customer's situation and decision has not been simple,” says Olle Eriksson, project manager of Open Kvarken, an open Source project in the Kvarken region between Umeå in Sweden and Vaasa in Finland. “Should you choose an online service or open source, or pay a service provider for their system over many years. Should I run my own operation, purchase services or cloud computing? The choice is not easy,” notes Eriksson.
In addition to Lars Jerkland, participants include Lars Wahlund, Swedish Pensions Agency, who will speak about the agency’s experiences with open source in critical business functions. From the municipality perspective, Göran Westerlund from KIVOS, will speak about 15 municipalities in western Sweden that are collaborating to develop a number of open source e-services. Claes Thagemark from the eGovernment Delegation will present the delegation’s practices and the new act on the reuse of public sector documents
The conference is included in the Open Kvarken project, which is a collective cross-border EU project between Västerbotten County in Sweden and Österbotten County in Finland with the framework for the Bothnia-Atlantica programme. The aim is to disseminate information about open source / software and open standards to industry, government, politicians, agency representatives, policy makers and individuals.
