Göran Sandberg among world's highly cited researchers

NEWS Göran Sandberg, professor of plant physiology and former Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University, made the list of the world's highly cited researchers in the sciences and social sciences by Thomson Reuters.

A total of 3,215 world-leading researchers are included in the Highly Cited Researchers 2014 list, which is based on the number of citations of scientific papers. Twenty-eight scientists from Sweden are mentioned, including Göran Sandberg, professor at the Department of Plant Physiology at Umeå University. Karin Ljung, his former doctoral student at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, is also one of the highly cited researchers.

In his research, Sandberg has made ​​groundbreaking discoveries about the significance of plant hormones. The research aims to understand how trees grow and what properties they have, something that could lead to faster-growing trees, and new products.

During 2005-2010, Sandberg was the vice-chancellor of Umeå University, acting as the head of the university and its chief representative. Since mid-2010, he has been the executive director at the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.
