NEWS On 25–26 April, the university is hosting a Nordic council meeting and a seminar on the theme The Nordic Universities role in the new Arctic. The invited participants are from universities in the Nordic centre's five member countries: Finland, Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Denmark.
“The University’s membership in the Nordic centre aims to develop contacts and cooperations between member universities and Fudan University in Shanghai. Therefore, it is particularly wonderful that we are able to organise an arctic seminar in connection to the council meeting. The speakers will together demonstrate part of the research carried out at our respective universities”, says Per A. Nilsson, International Office.
Representatives from 23 universities in the five member countries participate in the council meeting on 25 April.
On 26 April, the Nordic Universities role in the new Arctic seminar will be held, dealing with contemporary arctic research. One of the keynote speakers is René Söderman, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
Participants from Umeå University are Heidi Hansson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Peter Sköld, professor at the Centre for Sami Research and director at the Arctic Research Centre at Umeå University, Douglas Nord, guest professor at the department of Political Science, Isabelle Brännlund, research coordinator at the Centre for Sami Research and John Anderson, guest professor at the department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences.
The seminar is open to both employees and anyone outside the university.
The Nordic Universities role in the new Arctic
Umeå University has been a member of the Nordic Centre located at Fudan University, since the start 1995. The purpose is to drive and facilitate collaborations between researchers and students in China and the five Nordic countries. For researchers at member universities, the centre offers funding research for stays, services for visiting scholars at Fudan University, and funding for seminars, workshops and conferences.
In the autumn 2013, Umeå University, University of Oslo, University of Helsinki, taught a course, Nordic Studies, at University of Fudan for Chinese bachelor’s students.
In April 2017, the final part of the University’s manager and leadership pogramme (chefs- och ledarutvecklingsprogram) was located at Fudan University.
The Nordic Centre also granted funding for the workshop Closing the Gap: How technology changes spatial relationships between humans and animals, given in Shanghai in March 2018.
