The Vice-Chancellor and Board at the Faculty of Arts have reached the decision to give authorisation for the Building Office to carry out alterations and renovation of the Humanities Building as part of the efforts to establish creative environments at Umeå University.
The Humanities Building will be reconstructed into a modern and flexible teaching environment with educational facilities combined with study rooms and open functional study areas. The original building structure was completed in 1972.

A number of large classrooms will be removed to create an open learning environment. The southern glass façade will be replaced, and the proposal also includes that the Humanities Building will be extended about 500 square metres on two floors.

An extension of the building makes it possible to create a new compelling and attractive entrance, better accessiblity to the courtyard, and a large welcoming café attracts students to stay in the facility for group work or studying after lectures. The lower floor plan includes spalce for a dozen new offices or meeting rooms.
