Indian ambassador to Sweden visits Umeå

NEWS Balkrishna Shetty, the Ambassador of India to Sweden, honoured Umeå University and Umeå Municipality with a visit on Tuesday 13 April.

Ambassador Shetty and Mr. Oscar Kerketta, spent an intensive day in Umeå which included meetings with Göran Sandberg, Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University; Marie Louise Rönnmark, Mayor of the City of Umeå; and at the Västerbotten Chamber of Commerce.

In addition, he visited the top-ranked Umeå Institute of Design, met with Indian scholars currently at Umea University, and was given a guided tour of the campus.

About Balkrishna ShettyMr. Balkrishna Shetty was born on 15 June 1950 in India. He did hisB.Sc Honours in Mathematics from Presidency College, Calcutta (1970)and M.Sc. (Mathematics) from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur(1972). Between 1997-2001, he was posted at the Embassy of India, Paris,as Minister (Economic), dealing with all bilateral economic matters andrelations with Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD). He was appointed as Ambassador to the Republic of Senegaland was concurrently accredited to Cape Verde Islands, Guinea Bissau,Mali, Mauritania and to The Gambia from 2001-2005. He was associatedwith the establishment of TEAM–9 (Techno-Economic Cooperation forAfrica-India Movement), a regional economic cooperation mechanismbetween India and eight West African countries. From September 2005 to
January 2009, he was Ambassador of India to Bahrain.

He is currently Ambassador of India to Sweden and Latvia.
