A preparedness team has been formed at Umeå University to deal with issues that arise around the new influenza pandemic, formerly known as the swine influenza (swine flu). The group is headed by University Director Lars Lusting and currently consists of individuals from the Occupational Health Care, Student Health, Office of Human Resources, Information Office and the Head of Security.
The group will initially work towards spreading information about the influenza, inform and encourage preventative measures, as well as identifying the problems that can arise if many employees and students become ill simultaneously.
The most important measure one can take to prevent the spreading of this virus is that everyone who gets sick should stay at home. The Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet) has recommended that persons stay at home for seven days after the first signs of diagnosis.
Posters in English and Swedish will be placed throughout the campus with tips and advice from The National Board of Health and Welfare.
There is also be a that is regularly updated in English and Swedish on the Umeå University web site.
The University Management has begun initial contact with Västerbotten County Council and Esculapen - occupational healthcare - in order to discuss how vaccination concerns for employees and students can be resolved in the best possible manner. Optional vaccinations will be offered to the entire population of Sweden and is estimated to begin at the end of September or early October.
