NEWS Umeå University has been named as the host for the 2013 FISU (International University Sports Federation) Rectors' Forum. The forum is an opportunity for discussion of sport, education, and culture.
A FISU executive committee meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland recently made the decision to select Umeå as the host city.
Stefan Bergh, FISU Vice-President and Peter Hassmén, Professor at Umeå University presented the candidature for the 2013 Rectors’ Forum in Umeå to the executive committee of FISU. In 213, the Swedish NUSF will celebrate its centennial anniversary. This event will be commemorated by a number of activities during the entire year, the Rector’s Forum one of them. The bid is a joint effort from the Swedish NUSF, Umeå University and Umeå Municipality.
The theme proposed for this forum is ‘University and Community Growth through University Sport’. The FISU executive committee approved of the candidature and attributed the Forum to Umeå.
"Peter Hassmén and his staff at Umeå Centre for Sports Science have done a fantastic job," says Lena Gustafsson, Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University. "It is particularly gratifying that we will be hosting this forum given that we are in dialogue with the Swedish Sports Confederation towards work for a National Sports University in Umeå."
Umeå University applied to host the 2013 FISU Rectors’ Forum together with the Swedish University Sports Federation (SAIF). 300 to 500 unviersity rectors, vice-chancellors and presidents from throughout the world are expected to attend the event.
"Since this is an event with participants from around the world, it is great that we here in Umeå were able to offer a programme that won the FISU's approval," said Professor Peter Hassmén, Director of Umeå Sport Sciences Centre at Umeå University.
Today, Umeå Sport Sciences Centre has the broadest range of educational programmes and most sports students in Sweden. Umeå University is the only university in Sweden who has professorships in both medical- and behaviour sciences.
