One in three children suffers lifelong damage from bacterial meningitis

NEWS Bacterial meningitis causes permanent neurological impairments in one in three children. This is shown for the first time in an epidemiological study, in which the two Umeå researchers Urban Johansson Kostenniemi and Sven Arne Silfverdal participated.

Urban Johansson Kostenniemi is a specialist physician at the University Hospital of Umeå and affiliated with the Department of Clinical Sciences/Department of Clinical Microbiology, and Sven Arne Silfverdal is affiliated with the Department of Clinical Sciences.

Karolinska Institute led the study, which has been published in the leading medical journal JAMA Network Open. The study was conducted in collaboration with the pharmaceutical company MSD and was funded through a strategic research collaboration between Karolinska Institute and MSD.
