NEWS When registration for summer courses closed, 3,700 people had applied for a course offered by the Department of Language Studies. The course Animal and plant horror narratives had the highest number of applicants – and is also one of the ten most popular summer courses at Umeå University in 2026.

ImageSandra LundströmThe course Animal and plant horror narratives 7.5 credits explores themes that concern humans as prey and predator, climate, and identity.
Students taking the course will analyse films and literature from the 1950s onward, focusing on how animals and nature are portrayed as a threat to humanity.
There has also been a significant increase in enrollment for the course Svenska ord 7.5, which had 663 applicants for the summer of 2026 – a 56% increase from the summer of 2025.
