New alumni association in China

NEWS Former students of Umeå University can be found all over the world. A new alumni association was recently established in China by Damon Yang, who earned a master's degree in interactive technical systems.

It is very important for Umeå University to maintain a relationship with its former students, both domestic and international. The first alumni association in China has started up, due to the initiative of alumni coordinator Jessica Bergstrom Grahn.

Damon Yang, who studied at Umeå University between 2007 and 2010 is the main contact for this new assocation. Damon Yang is currently employed at Ericsson in Beijing and spends his spare time working with the alumni association. Since it's still in the start-up phase, the membership is is rather small, but his ambition is for it to expand.

Damon Yang arranged an initial dinner meeting in March for alumni in Beijing, in which eight alumni attended. According to Damon, everyone had a good time and they were able to communicate even if they had never known one another before.

"I think it's because we all have the same "Umeå genes" in us," he says.

This upcoming autumn, Umeå University is planning a trip to China for the purpose of participating in alumni meetings. Anders Fällström, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Education, will be attending.
