PNU student named winner in Korea scholarship competition

NEWS Seoljong Kim from Pusan National University (PNU) has won a full-tuition waiver to study the two-year master's programme in Plant and Forest Biotechnology at Umeå University, as part of the Korea Talent Race 2014 competition.

The Korea Talent Race competition is organised by the Swedish Institute and the company Sqore, along with help and support from the Swedish Embassy in Seoul. The theme of the 2014 competition was sustainability. Participants were tested in 16 different skills related to sustainability in several disciplines and write a motivational essay.

Part of Seoljong Kim’s motivation was as follows: "Winning the scholarship will give me a great chance to develop myself and jump into the field of forestry. I believe that Sweden and Umeå University can provide the optimal way for me to prepare for pursuing my dream."

He will begin studies in the two-year master of science in plant and forest biotechnology programme that commences on 31 August 2015.

The objective of the competition was to attract South Korean final-year bachelor’s students and recent graduates – to study a master’s degree in Sweden to one of five Swedish universities beginning in autumn 2015. A total of 800 individuals competed and four were selected to receive scholarships at Umeå University, Chalmers University, Linköping University and Lund University. No winner was selected for Uppsala University.

Registration for the next Korea Talent Race edition for 2015 is currently open for talented Korean bachelor students and recent graduates who want to study in one of the world’s most innovative environments.
