SEK 140 million to 70 young researchers at Umeå University
NEWS
Umeå University will be financing up to 2 million crowns each to the 70 recently named distinguished young researchers at the university.
“This is the future of Umeå University, which is why we are carrying out this investment that is like no other in Sweden,” says vice-chancellor Göran Sandberg.
“The aim is to identify our foremost researchers in an early phase in their careers and support them so they remain with us, as well as develop their research and strengthen their qualifications,” explains Marianne Sommarin, vice-rector with responsibility for research development and research evaluation at Umeå University.
The career grant titled ”Young Researcher Award”, has been open for application to those that are young in their academic careers – candidates that have received their doctoral level degree within approximately two to ten years – and are employed at Umeå University. This grant is the only one of its kind in Sweden. The researchers have been selected following an external evaluation by a panel of experts.
”The national panel members have consisted of experienced evaluators. There were a total of 218 applications received, which was pleasantly high. The evaluators were extremely impressed by the quality of the applicants which resulted that we doubled the number of grants we initially planned to distribute, “explains Sommarin.
The panel members have evaluated the qualifications and merits by means of reviewing the research plan, independence and the scientific merits, taking into account the diverse conditions the time of post-doctoral research and discipline,
There are four departments that were notable in receiving a significant number of career grants. The department of physics received eight grants, department of chemistry (7), department of historical, philosophical and religious studies (5), and department of sociology (4). Five departments were awarded three grants and four departments had two grants. A new announcement of career grants to young researchers will take place in approximately two years.
“We want our researchers to feel that they have a stimulating research environment and that they choose to remain with us,” says Marianne Sommarin.
