UID student winner of VDA Design Awards

NEWS Eric Leong, alumnus of the master programme in transportation design at Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå university, won first prize in VDA Design Awards with his innovative car design "Audi Elite".

The competition is organised by the German Automotive Industry Association and the German Design Council. The competition takes place every other year and is open to young, aspiring designers that have recently graduated.

Eric Leong completed his master degree at Umeå Institute of Design, UID, in 2012 and entered the competition with his degree project. His winning design concept is a single person vehicle with a complex mechanical system where the driver controls the car through movements and gestures with hands, arms, legs and feet – indeed the whole body is used when driving. The system adapts to the driver's skills, so that the driver gradually gains control of the vehicle and its speed.

"An extraordinary concept that integrates the driver more strongly again in operating the vehicle. The way in which the driver can use the car emphasizes the “gamification” approach and plays a major role in the innovative impression made" the jury states in its motivation.

The first prize is 4 000 euro.
