In only 50 years, Umeå University has become a well-reputed and sought after university.For years, politicians, civil servants, editors and others in power fought side by side in order for Umeå to get its university.Those who fought for the establishment of the university in the 1940s and 50s could hardly have imagined the university to have around 30,000 students and 4,300 employees today.
The 50th anniversary celebration takes place throughout the entire year, with some extra highlights in the autumn. Saturday 12 September marks the beginning of Umeå University’s Anniversary Week. Join us in the celebrations at the gigantic cake fest on the Rådhustorget town square in the midst of the Umeå Taste Festival taking place at the same time. Also, take the opportunity to participate in anniversary lectures and discuss the challenges in society at Whole Earth – a conference about sustainable development.
