Umeå University jumped eight spots - to place 289 - in the recently published QS World University Rankings 2013/14 evaluation of the world's top universities. This corresponds to a placement of seven in Sweden.
QS World University Ranking takes into account more than 2,000 of the world's universities and ranks 800 of them. Umeå University is successful in terms of quality of learning, as measured by the ratio between the number of students and teachers/researchers. In addition, Umeå University scores high for citations and its percentage of international researchers and teachers. In the rankings of specific subjects, the university was strongest in the fields of life sciences and medicine.
The top of the ranking list is dominated mainly by universities from the United States and United Kingdom. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is ranked first, followed by the University of Cambridge and Harvard University. Among Swedish universities, Lund University is first (67th) followed by Uppsala University (79th), Royal Institute of Technology (118th), Stockholm University (170th), Chalmers (202nd) and University of Gothenburg (205th). Umeå University, founded in 1965 and youngest among the above, is ranked seventh in Sweden with a 289th global placement.
In June, two international ranking systems, including QS, placed Umeå University among the world’s best under the age of 50 years, at #29 and #34. Umeå University was also the highest ranked institution in Sweden and the Nordic countries. These lists focus on young universities with great potential for the future.
