Umeå University jumped 22 places – to 267th – in the latest QS World University Ranking 2014/2015. This is the university’s best result ever in this ranking, which also represents a placement of 124th in Europe and 7th in Sweden.
"This year's ranking placement indicates that we maintain a relatively strong and stable position, both national and international,” says Lena Gustafsson, Vice-Chancellor at Umeå University. “Simultaneously, one must be aware that rankings are not a direct measure of quality. But because the lists have an impact, they are nevertheless substantial.”
QS World University Ranking considers over 3,000 higher education institutions all over the world, and ranks more than 800. The top 400 universities are ranked individually, while those placed 401 and over are ranked in groups.
Institutions are assessed using six different indicators, where academic reputation has the greatest percentage weight. Academic reputation is based on a global survey of academics. In this area, Umeå University improved its position by 40 places.
Subject areas are also individually ranked and Umeå University is in the 151-200 grouping in environmental studies, geography, psychology and sociology. In addition, Umeå University is ranked 187th in the world for life sciences and medicine in the QS World University Rankings by Faculty 2014/15.
Last year, Umeå University was ranked 27th in the world in the QS 50 under 50 ranking, which lists the world’s top 50 universities established within the last 50 years.
