Umeå University highly rated by the Swedish Research Council
NEWS
The initiative for creating strategic research areas at Umeå University has been remarkably successful. That is shown in the evaluation presented by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) about the research initiative that has been carried out between 2010 and 2014.
The Strategic Research Area (SRA) initiative for research funding was launched by the Swedish Government in the research and innovation bill of 2008. It specified that an investment should be made on strategic research, and Swedish research was deemed to be of the highest international standard or was assessed to have the potential to be so. In the period between 2010 and 2014 the initiative encompassed SEK 5.3 billion.
Umeå University is a main applicant for two SRAs:
Ecosystem dynamics in the Baltic Sea in a changing climate perspective – Ecochange
Bio4Energy
Both of Umeå University’s main SRAs received high scores. The Ecochange project is described as an area with great potential of reaching world class in the upcoming years thanks to an excellent strategy in using the SRA funds.
Bio4Energy has received praise for its high international quality and scores Good/Excellent, but it still has room for improvement.
Umeå University is a co-applicant for six SRAs:
The U-Can Comprehensive Cancer Consortium (Uppsala)
Forest and other plants (SLU)
Bridging Research and practice for Better Health: The Comprehensive Care Science Centre (KI)
eSSENCE – An eScience Centre (Uppsala)
Translational Program in Diabetes Research, Education and Care (KI)
Cognitive and Motor functions in Health and Disease during the Lifespan (KI)
“I am pleased to hear that our SRAs are so highly rated and are therefore granted continued funds, which also involves areas where our staff has co-applied for SRAs with main applicants at other Swedish universities. Congratulations to all involved,” says Lena Gustafsson, Vice-Chancellor at Umeå University.
