Umeå University holds its position in new THE ranking

Umeå University is ranked #41 in the world among universities established between 1945 and 1966, in what Times Higher Education describes as the Golden Age in global higher education.
“This is a good result considering that we’re being compared to many great universities that were established in the same period, one being the University of Gothenburg. The ranking thereby confirms the image of Umeå University having progressed well over its first 50 years, and is a university that not least conducts successful research,” says Hans Adolfsson, Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University.
On 5 April, Times Higher Education, THE, published its ranking of young universities – a list of the foremost institutions of higher education under 50 years – that THE has presented since 2012. Umeå University has held a position on the topmost 50 on that list, but from 2016 the University no longer qualified as it turned 50 in 2015.
This year, however, THE has produced a couple of new lists, for instance one of universities founded between 1945 and 1966 – a period characterised by heavy expansion of higher education and research, which THE describes as the Golden Age in global higher education. This list contains two Swedish institutions of higher education; the University of Gothenburg on #21 and Umeå University on #41.
The metrics that Umeå University scored the highest on is citations. When it comes to citations, Umeå University lands on #23 among all universities established between 1945 and 1966.
