Umeå University in 2015 Shanghai Ranking of top world universities

Umeå University is ranked #314th in the 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking. It is a slight decline from last year’s placement of #297. Umeå is 8th among higher education institutions in Sweden.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University publishes an annual rankings list of the world’s top 500 universities – Academy Ranking of World Universities. The ranking is based on information about the university's research, including number of Nobel Laureates and Fields Medals, citations in scientific journals and the number of publications in the journals of Nature and Science. More than 1200 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 500 universities are published.
In this year’s ARWU ranking, Umeå University is placed at #314, which is a slight drop from the 2014 ranking of #297. The change is due a lower value in the objective indicators that measure the number of publications in prestigious science journals. The world's top ranked universities are dominated by US institutions, with Harvard University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of California, Berkeley among the top four.
A total of eleven higher education institutions in Sweden made the ranking list, with Karolinska Institute, Uppsala University and Stockholm University among the top three. Umeå University is in 8th place nationally, followed by Linköping University and Chalmers University of Technology.
The ARWU also ranked the top 200 universities in five broad subject fields: natural science and mathematics, engineering/technology and computer sciences, life and agricultural sciences, clinical medicine and pharmacy, and social sciences.
Umeå University is in the 101-150 range group for Life & Agricultural Sciences and 151-200 in Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy.
