Umeå University welcomed new students with a surprise

NEWS On Thursday night, Umeå Folkets Hus was filled with laughter and excited voices when Umeå University’s new students gathered for a surprise welcome party.

Umeå University and Umeå Municipality had teamed up to give Umeå’s new students an unforgettable experience and make them feel welcome in their new hometown.

-We hope that the students feel that they have chosen the right city, a city where you can combine studies and leisure, said Ulrika Frick Lang, head of communications at Umeå University.

At 9 pm, the university’s vice-chancellor Lena Gustafsson and Anna Olofsson, head of city marketing at Umeå Municipality, welcomed the students at Umeå Folkets Hus. Then the dancefloors were opened for a night of music and dancing, featuring hot local live-acts like Patrik Backlund or rapper Cleo, and some of Umeå’s best DJs.

To participate in this event, the students could collect a wristband at the University’s Welcome Fair that same day. The wristband served as a ticket and was exclusively given to new students at Umeå University.

The Welcome Fair is an opportunity for students to get to know the city of Umeå and the University a little better. A great number of exhibitors - closely connected with student social life - from the university, municipality, organisations, clubs, and associations attracted old and new students with advice and information, fun contests and give-aways.

-We want the students to enjoy their time in Umeå, not only their studies, but also their free time. At the Welcome Fair, they get an overview where they can get involved, said project leader Maria Hammarström.

During lunchtime, Culture on Campus presented Umeå singer Cajsa Siik live on stage. The Welcome Fair was organised by Umeå University in partnership with Umeå Municipality and the student unions.
