Unique international course for PhD supervisors in Umeå

NEWS For the first time ever, an educational programme for postgraduate supervisors from Sweden and abroad is being offered. The Umeå Centre for Global Health Research, a centre of excellence within Umeå University, has along with Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) invited all its international partners to participate in a week-long course.

The education programme is provided through the HandUm program, which is part of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (UPC) at Umeå University.

“The course is the first of its kind, and it is probably unique in the world,” says Karin Ågren, coordinator for the HandUm programme. “There are total of around Total 30 supervisors participating from Vietnam, Nicaragua, Guatemala, South Africa, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Iran, Indonesia and Sweden."

The course began on 11 May and will conclude on Friday the 15th, when the participants will be attending a doctoral dissertation defence by a PhD candidate at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health Sciences. Mark Collinson will be defending his thesis on the dynamics of migration, health and poverty in rural South Africa.

“The purpose of this course is to discuss useful models for building a quality, educational programme for postgraduate supervisors that contributes to scientific development," says Karin Ågren.

The Swedish Research School for Public Health - a partnership between Umeå University and Karolinska Institute - is also involved in this course.
The public dissertation defence will take place at 9:00 am in Betula Lecture Hall, Norrlands University Hospital.
