During 2026-2027, the University Library's entrance area and Study Hall will undergo renovation, which means that all floors in that section will be closed to visitors. During the renovation phase, the library will be located in the Learning Space with an entrance to the left of the regular entrance.
Despite having significantly less space during the renovation, the library has been able to retain many of its functions, such as the information desk, printers, search computers, thesis posting board, new books display and a limited number of study places, to name a few examples. Malin Josefsson, library director, is aware that the changes are noticeable:
- It is inevitable that our visitors are affected by the extensive renovation that the library is currently undergoing, which has become clear with phase 2. I fully understand that this could cause inconvenience, but I would like to emphasise that we are aiming for a fresh and even more functional University Library. We are currently doing everything we can to maintain the best possible service.
During the renovation period, some books can be picked up on your own, while others must first be requested through the library search tool and collected by the staff. However, the textbook collection is available on open shelves in the compact library in the Learning Space.
In late winter 2026, the renovated quiet area on floor 3 will open, offering a quiet study environment for individual work, something that many students have been looking forward to. In 2027, all renovations will be complete, and Umeå University Library will be able to offer a significantly more modern and functional library.
