A marketing tour dubbed ’Caught by Umeå’ will ’bring Umeå to Europe’ in a bid to raise interest for the city ahead of 2014 when Umeå will be the Cultural Capital of Europe. Vaartoe will participate in the tour and will be represented in all seven capital cities to deliver lectures and meet alumni. Vaartoe has been invited to illuminate Sami history, culture and society from an academic perspective as well as highlight the fact that Umeå is a part of Sápmi.
In our lectures we will discuss issues regarding: discrimination of Sami as an Indigenous people; exploitation of natural resources on Sami land; exoticism and exploitation of Sami culture as well as historical and current colonial power structures. We will also use these issues as a basis for discussion around the processes to win and deliver the Cultural Capital year and the Caught by Umeå marketing tour.
