An introduction to electron microscopy – Instruments and methods at UCEM - March 22nd-23rd

New and just started EM users are invited to an online introduction course to all different possibilities and method offered at the facility. It is a condensed summary of all different EM instruments and sample preparation equipment at UmU. We will talk about EM functions, method and discuss results, images and information you can expect from an EM project. Experienced users are also welcome, if you like to learn something new, join selected topics.

The following topics will be introduced: TEM and SEM, theory about electrons, image formation and cameras. SEM detector functions and analysis. Specimen preparation for EM. Life science sample preparation, fixation, dehydration, resin embedding and cryo-fixation methods, ultra-microtome sectioning, Tokuyasu and gold-immunolabeling. Correlative imaging, tomography, FIB, cryo-EM, imaging processing including 3D image reconstruction methods. With research examples, links to further information to individual studies and time for questions.

During corona restrictions we cannot offer a practical “Basic EM course” in the lab. But if you have attended this introduction and are interested in a specific method for your project, you can receive individual digital introduction, project planning and individual lab/instrument training to start your project and to learn the instruments and methods your project requires.
