Moving people: an interdisciplinary network on migration, health, and participation

Research project The Moving People Network is about promoting knowledge related to global migration, health inequality and participation. We are an interdisciplinary group that shares a common interest in ‘people on the move’ and we contribute different concepts, methods, geographical locations and previous experiences that together serve as a resource in this common endeavour.

The network's goal is to promote synergy between different research projects while strengthening our network partners' competencies through various insights and from members' different disciplines in healthcare science and the humanities. We strive to create a vibrant community to learn together and support researchers at all stages of their careers. What distinguishes the Moving People network is its rich interdisciplinarity, characterised by a diversity of disciplines that examine migration from multiple perspectives.

Project description

The Moving People network is an interdisciplinary research group dedicated to exploring the complex relationships between migration, health and social participation. Our main goal is to promote collaboration between different research projects while improving the expertise of network partners by integrating knowledge from related disciplines. The network is characterised by its highly interdisciplinary nature and encompasses areas such as cultural geography, nursing, occupational therapy, medicine, epidemiology, ethnology, anthropology and sociology. By utilising this diverse expertise, we strive to gain new insights and concrete ideas for innovative research approaches and new perspectives that can address migration-related challenges. It is crucial for the Swedish context to obtain a comprehensive picture of health and social participation in connection with migration in order to promote equal health, improve health outcomes and promote inclusive societies that value diversity. Our activities will include one on-site meeting per year, alternating between Malmö, Stockholm and Umeå, supplemented by online seminars and planning sessions. These gatherings will facilitate knowledge exchange, the development of new research projects and the design of innovative health and social care services, while emphasising intersectional perspectives.

We recognise the importance of engaging with individuals who have migration experiences and collaborating with local organisations to promote social participation and inclusion. Our research agenda is based on a critical perspective on migration issues and advocates an inclusive approach rooted in human rights. By addressing health inequities and barriers to social participation, the Moving People network aims to contribute to transformative research that improves the well-being of migrant populations in Sweden.
