Springboards and Parentheses: Representations of the Age of Liberty and the reign of Gustav III in historical culture 1870–1990

PhD project The research project examines historical culture and the construction and the presentation of historical eras. The aim of the study is to investigate how the Age of Liberty and the reign of Gustav III has been depicted in Swedish historical culture and mediation 1870–1990. In the study, the relation between different historical cultural areas will be examined to see how they have steered the depictions, in order to locate where the renegotiation of national historical narratives take place.

This research project examines Sweden's national historical culture through a predefined "case" concerning the Age of Liberty and the reign of Gustav III. The main research problem concerns how history is mediated and how historical narratives are renegotiated and re-evaluated within a national historical culture. The aim of this research project is to investigate how the Age of Liberty and the reign of Gustav III has been depicted in Swedish historical culture during the period 1870–1990. Furthermore, the study will investigate the relationship between historical cultural depictions within different areas. These historical cultural areas are: historical research, history textbooks, public debates and popular science.
