The regionalization of Northern Sweden

Research project This project has investigated the initiative to establish a regional level of government in Northern Sweden 2011-12 - with regard to both the process of decision-making and citizens attitudes.

During 2010-2011 there were extensive plans to replace the northern county councils with regional levels of government. This project investigates the process of establishing these regions (which failed) but also citizens views on the proposals and on the development of Northern Sweden. This project has investigated the process with attempting to establish regions in Northern Sweden but also the citizens views on regionalization and on how Northern Sweden should develop. The project was carried out during two phases - 2008 och 2010 - and included two citizen surveys. It was financed by the northernmost county councils and Umeå University and carried out by a research group from Umeå University, Lulea Technical University and Mid Sweden University.
