Fellowship at Semiconductor Energy Laboratory in Japan

The call welcomes Swedish researchers to apply for a research fellowship at Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) in Japan. Researchers participate in or conduct their own research on site. The aim is to support technological solutions that contribute to combating global warming. The stay in Japan is limited to three months, but remote collaborations can be longer.

Aim of the fellowship

Through the establishment of the “Dr Shunpei Yamazakis Stiftelse” (The Foundation), Swedish researchers are invited to apply for a very generous Fellowship at SEL’s frontier technology laboratory through the Sweden- Japan Foundation (SJF). The purpose of the Fellowship is as specified in the deed:

“The purpose of the Foundation is to combat global warming through technological solutions, especially solutions that already exist or will be developed at Dr. Yamazaki's Semiconductor Energy Laboratories (SEL) in Japan. Funds from this foundation can be awarded as financial support to Swedish researchers who (1) want to participate in research projects at SEL, (2) want to perform their own experiments with equipment at SEL, (3) or a combination of (1) and (2).”

Facilities and access

During the Fellowship period, the researcher(s) will have unique, free of charge, and dedicated access to R&D infrastructure, super-computing facilities for material and device simulation, equipment for organic material synthesis, thin-film deposition, nano-device fabrication, and instruments for physical, chemical, optical, and electrical analysis. SEL Staff will provide support as needed. Although SEL has a strong focus on novel battery materials and oxide semiconductors for ultra-low power computing, the Fellowship is not limited to these subjects.

Financial support

The Fellowship offer from SEL includes airfare Sweden - Japan w/r and accommodation including Wi-Fi and utilities expense (In principle, single occupancy. Please contact SEL if you come to Japan with your family. Airfare Sweden - Japan w/r will be provided for one person). The Fellowship is based on the 90 days visa-free agreement between Sweden and Japan, which does not allow SEL to pay a salary during the time at SEL.

Duration

Up to 3 months on site, but the project period can be longer through remote collaboration. Workplace: SEL laboratories in Atsugi, Kanagawa, 1 hour by train from central Tokyo.

Application

Applications are made through SJF’s application system Apply via SJFs website www.swedenjapan.se during the application period: 1 May – 31 July yearly. Applications will be evaluated by the Foundation’s scientific committee. Only one researcher is accepted for a fellowship per year.
