In Sweden, research is funded by various public agencies, public foundations and private funding bodies. The following is a brief description of and links to a selection of these to help you narrow down which ones might best match your research.

Governmental research councils

Swedish Energy Agency

The Swedish Energy Agency funds research on renewable energy and sustainable technology for future energy systems.

Formas

Formas supports research that can contribute to sustainable development in the environment, agricultural sciences (such as agriculture and forestry) and spatial planning.

Forte

Forte funds research in health, working life and welfare, with a focus on societal benefit and evidence-based solutions.

Swedish Research Council (VR)

The Swedish Research Council funds research infrastructure and research in all disciplinary domains, with a particular focus on basic research.

Vinnova

Vinnova, Sweden’s innovation agency, funds needs-driven research and innovation in technology, transport, communication and working life.

Research foundations

The Erling-Persson Foundation

The foundation primarily supports research in medicine and healthcare, but also promotes teaching, education and the development of children and young people.

Kempestiftelserna

Kempe grants are available to individuals belonging to institutions that conduct research or education in the Swedish counties of Norrbotten, Västerbotten or Västernorrland. The application requires approval from the head of your department (or equivalent).

Mistra – the Swedish foundation for strategic environmental research

Mistra invests in research that can solve environmental problems and strengthen Sweden’s competitiveness.

Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ)

RJ funds research in the humanities and social sciences.

Royal Skyttean Society

The Royal Skyttean Society supports the cultural and scientific development of Norrland.

Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences supports research and education in most scientific fields through scholarships, grants, research fellow positions and scientific exchanges.

STINT funds projects that promote internationalisation of research and higher education.

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research funds research in science, technology and medicine with potential for industrial application.

The Wallenberg Foundations

Sweden’s largest private research funding body supports excellent and long-term research in several areas through 16 different foundations. Many calls require internal nomination through your faculty. Learn about the process well in advance.
